ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to determine postpartum ovarian activity of 24 multiparous Holstein x Zebu cows consuming diets with three levels of neutral-detergent fiber (NDF) in a tropical dairy system. This research was conducted from November 2011 to August 2013 at La Posta Research Center (INIFAP) located in Paso del Toro, Ver., Mexico. Treatments T1, T2 and T3 consisted of 63, 57 and 45% of concentrate, 37, 43 and 55% of forage, and 38, 42 and 50% of NDF, respectively. The concentrate had 16% CP and 70% TND, and the forage (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania) had 3.8% CP and 80.1% NDF. The treatments were offered 30 d before calving to onset of the first postpartum corpora lutea (CL). Follicular dynamics was evaluated by a bug BCF ultrasound Innovative Imaging with a 7.5 MgHz scanner,

from day 25 postpartum until the appearance from day 25 postpartum until the appearance of the CL. Cows fed 27% of NDF had higher body condition score (BCS; P ≤ 0.05) and higher percentage of animals (52%) had CL. Cows fed 23% of NDF had higher (P ≤ 0.05) milk production but lower BCS, and 30.4% of cows had CL. Cows fed 50% of NDF also lost BCS (P ≤ 0.05) and only 18% of the animals developed CL. Maximum consumption of NDF in lactating cows in the tropical system had a negative effect on DM intake which resulted in a higher (P≤0.05) percentage of animals that showed ovulation and higher (P≤0.05) production of milk.
